Teaching guide | How we express ourselves | 3rd July 2020

I designed a teaching guide for teachers on how we can use Arts to express ourselves for a group assignment. Together with 3 other members, we utilised applications such as Canva and Google Documents.

In this teaching guide, we have literacy resources, lesson design ideas and activity sheets which scaffolds children's learning in art. We chose to focus on Visual arts and Performing arts where children can explore different ways to express their feelings, identity and interests through the forms of arts.

I worked on designing lesson ideas for Performing arts in particular, Theatre Arts and ensured it was engaging and age-appropriate for 5 years old children.

Key takeaways

I learnt to be resilient as it was not easy for us to collaborate in times of this Coronavirus situation where most of us have to stay at home and be engaged with home-based learning (HBL).

I designed a tool kit based on a numeracy book suitable for children ages 4 - 5 for a group assignment. Together with 3 other members, We mostly used recycled materials that we can find at home and ensure our end products are durable.

We created a board game concept with self-correcting resources inside for children to play and learn independently with their friends. Our main focus was about number operations with varying difficulties for 4 - 5 years old.

Well received by module lecturer and peers. Comments included "Interactive game, good that your group tried to use a different method to teach chosen concept"

Key takeaways

Through this assignment, I learnt more about myself where I now know what are my teaching preference. I prefer using a more hands-on method for children to learn.

Literacy Lap book| 22nd January 2019

I designed a literacy lap book that is suitable for preschool-aged children as a group assignment. Together with 2 other members, we came out with interactive activities that target the literacy aspects of reading and writing.

This lap book is inspired by a book titled Play by Jessica Young and illustrated by Daniel Wiseman. I worked on coming up with possible ideas for our activities inside the kit. It was also well received by our module lecturer. Comments included "Age-appropriate and evident effort was seen in making the lap book".

Key takeaways

I learnt how to communicate well with my teammates and gained knowledge on the considerations when creating a lap book for children (size, content, materials.. etc).
